Some of my Own Writing
The Rubber Ducks book proved excellent! Very funny, and although it leaned towards the sceptical position with regards to psi-research, it also made it hard to judge whether the author 'believed' or not, as the story got told by a 'dead' sceptical narrator. Any more would prove a Spoiler - but I recommend it. The library shelved it under Crime and Thrillers, but it seemed a bit more than that, including a fair bit of satirical humour - I'll definitely try some more offerings from Christopher Brookmyre.
I have worked on the cross-over between 'performance' magic and ritual magick, and the connections to deception and belief systems in general, with some contributions to the Maybe Logic gang:
Magical Means: A Meeting of Mind
(8000 words of mine, pix by the fantastic Bobby from Madison Underground Press) - an imaginary encounter between Houdini and Crowley.
See other stuff of Bobby's here, then hire him to do some graphic work for you...why not?
* I Wouldn't Want to Play Cards with Him*
A piece about randomness and possibility, odds, cards, games and cheating.
*Indian Rope Trick*
Review of an analysis of this urban mythical trick, and how it arose.
*Always Assuming*
Short piece about con men, and manipulation of other people’s realities.
*Deception Detection*
Moving on from Always Assuming to the cross-over between magic, intelligence operations, confidence tricks, etc. This got expanded into:
* The Mind Playing Tricks On Itself*
Bart Whaley, Orson Welles, and Deception Detection
**Bearded magicians***Eugene Burger on why boys get into magi… maybe...
